Love stories can end only to begin again with new characters, which shows us how life can be comical and clumsy – and endless.
It all begins with an unusual, and already somewhat inebriated, dialogue, which results in the twinning of two cities: one in France, the other in Portugal – Compiègne and Guimarães. With it also appear characters who complete the connection between these two worlds that, in the past, experienced the transits of emigration and poverty: they all live around Amália (a Portuguese woman who sings fados in D and has the surname Rodrigues) and Cédric (a Frenchman who works in the local morgue).
Between Amália and Cédric, a love full of coincidences and difficulties is born: they were born on the same day and in the same year. Although she was born in Guimarães (a city of industry and commerce in the heart of Minho) and he in Compiègne, they share the same perplexities, the same search for identity, and the same thirst for love, conflicting with the past and the present. The confrontation is sometimes burlesque, sometimes touching, but also tragic, somber, and multicolored. It is humor and grace that determine what life is like – and if one can escape the law of death.
