Paula

Paula, the writer's daughter, fell seriously ill, and soon after, slipped into a coma. During months in the hospital, the author began writing her family's story for her daughter, who remained unconscious. In this account, we are led to discover the most intimate secrets and memories of her past and her native country, Chile, while also witnessing successive attempts to resist and, ultimately, accept the imminent departure of a loved one. Written as a catharsis in the face of an irreversible illness, Paula is a tremendous life lesson, while also allowing us to better understand the fantastic world of The House of the Spirits and Eva Luna, and conclude that their characters truly belong to the fantastic world of Isabel Allende: her enchanted reality.
