In 1807, something happened that had never happened before, and I could hardly believe it when Grandpa told me. After having conquering kings, kings who faced the seas, and even kings who died in battles, we now had a prince who, knowing we were about to be invaded by the French, decided to leave with the royal family and other important court members for Brazil! That's exactly what happened.
They filled the ships with all the jewels, furniture, books, and tapestries they could, and off they went to Rio de Janeiro, which became the capital of the Empire. This divided the country and, as you'll see, caused many things to change here.
