The Dream of the Celt is based on the life of Irishman Roger Casement, British consul in the Belgian Congo in the early 20th century, who for two decades denounced the atrocities of Leopold II's regime. This man, a friend of Joseph Conrad (and who guided him on a journey along the Congo River, revealing to him a reality later portrayed in the novel Heart of Darkness), had an extraordinary life, full of adventure. A staunch defender of human rights - as also evidenced by the reports he wrote during his stay in the Peruvian Amazon - he actively campaigned for Irish nationalism at the end of his life, eventually being sentenced to death for treason and executed.
