The Interrogation of Adam Pollo (1963), Le Clézio's first book, brought him immediate success, earning him the Prix Renaudot. In 2008, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

It is no mere coincidence that the hero of this book has an unusual name – Adam Pollo. Adam represents here, at once, the first and the last man, the one whom madness, or a strange desire to attempt an extreme experience, isolates from the rest of humanity. But the world cannot comprehend his behaviour.

Is he a deserter? An escapee from a psychiatric asylum?
Adam takes refuge in an abandoned house, far from the city and the incomprehensible order that reigns there. Through obscure coincidences, he connects with a young woman who seems to serve as his guide and counterpart. After crossing the boundaries of obsession, he descends back into the world like a prophet. It is then that his life merges with Life itself – animal, material, and unknowable. He transforms into the beach where he walks, the dog he follows, the rat he crushes… And all this will inevitably lead him to be considered mad by men, whose taboos, like a new infernal Adam, he seeks to violate.
