The University of Paris is, at the end of the 13th century, the greatest center of learning in the world. But innovators are persecuted. Why? The defenders of Catholic dogma are concerned by the intellectual independence of the Parisian masters, understood as a threat against faith. The Bishop of Paris condemns the "errors" spread in the Faculty of Arts and the inquisitor of France accuses some masters of heresy... But behold, a cardinal open to innovation is elected to the Apostolic See. This Portuguese Pope, John XXI, wants to reconcile science and religion.
The fundamentalists don't like this and, if they can't silence the free-thinkers, they can at least make them die. This storm, much more violent than "the Galileo affair" would be, has been practically erased from history. The rare documents that were not burned or censored allow a glimpse of a true conspiracy, which involved the most powerful princes of the Church.
