“The Gospel According to Jesus Christ,” he would say, “is the novel that caused the most controversy and is the reason I moved from Lisbon to Lanzarote, Spain. It’s a book I didn’t plan, because it had never crossed my mind to write a life of Jesus, there being so many and such differing interpretations of that life, sometimes destructive, or, on the contrary, adhering to the restrictive impositions of dogma and tradition. In short, everything has been said about the son of Joseph and Mary, so there wouldn’t be a need for yet another book, and even less so one written by an atheist like me. Simply put, man proposes and circumstances dispose, and here is what impelled me to a task whose complexity still frightens me today.”
