Melanie Stryder refuses to disappear. Our World has been invaded by an invisible enemy. Humans are being turned into hosts for these invaders, their minds purged, while their bodies remain the same and life continues without any apparent change. Most of humanity cannot resist.
When Melanie, one of the few "untamed" humans, is captured, she is sure that the end has come. Wanderer, the invading Soul to whom Melanie's body is given, has been warned about the challenge of living inside a human: overwhelming emotions, excessive senses, overly present memories. But there is a difficulty that Wanderer does not expect: the previous owner of the body fights the possession of her mind.
Wanderer sifts through Melanie's thoughts, hoping to discover the whereabouts of the human resistance. Melanie floods her mind with visions of the man she is in love with - Jared, a human survivor living in hiding. Unable to free herself from the desires of her body, Wanderer begins to feel attracted to the man she is tasked with betraying. At the moment when a common enemy turns Wanderer and Melanie into involuntary allies, the two embark on a dangerous and unknown search for the man they love.
