Claire Lidman has been dead for fourteen years. Her family’s identification of the body and dental records prove it. Yet, Samuel – her husband – refuses to believe she is dead. His doubts increase when a woman who appears to be Claire accidentally appears in a photograph taken by a tourist in Venice. Hans Rekke and Micaela Vargas seem to be the right people to help him clarify the situation. However, the same investigation that leads them to the banking crisis of the 90s and the oligarchs' struggle against the former KGB will force them to revisit the past and confront long-forgotten painful memories. Professor Rekke must face his eternal arch-enemy Gabor Morovia – a man whose intelligence is only matched by his immense cruelty. At the same time, Vargas seeks to expose the crimes of her brother, Lucas, a drug dealer operating in the neighbourhood where they both grew up. However, this confrontation takes a back seat when she discovers the identity of Julia's new boyfriend, Professor Rekke's daughter.
