- So these croquettes... Justino yelled, already irritated [...]. Gervásio Lobato caused a sensation over a century ago. A journalist and novelist, his humour and comedic flair were passed down from hand to hand, from generation to generation. Lisbon in a Shirt, since its publication in 1882, was his most resounding success, with countless editions. And who knows Gervásio Lobato? Once one of the great names in Portuguese humour, today he is a forgotten author, remembered only by a street named after him in Campo de Ourique.
Lobato captures small scenes of Lisbon's daily life, dissecting behaviours, ridiculing them, and taking them to an extreme where laughter is inevitable. Everything takes place at the end of the 19th century, but the parody is still relevant: we witness the thirst for protagonism, the delusion of superiority, a certain ceremonialism or lack thereof.
The adventures of the Antunes family, their in-laws Martim (without an 's'), the Torres family, the councillor with his marriageable daughters, and Dr. Formigal, among other very quirky characters.
The theme is Lisbon, a Lisbon that the author undresses or surprises in a shirt. A novel that, read today, captures contemporary reality red-handed.
- Shut up, don't answer Daddy [...].
