Under the pretext of sexual freedom, these couples form and break up randomly through encounters, devoid of any genuine feelings. Despite the detailed account of their amorous behavior, this terrible novel should be seen as an attempt to describe a bourgeois society without morals or ideals.
The couples live on the fringes of public life, just as they live on the fringes of any ethics: there is no hesitation between democratic spirit and a taste for private games. The sense of duty and work gives way to playful improvisation associated with the game of truth.
