Mario Vega is seven years old, and his life is about to change forever. In a house in a wealthy Seville suburb, his father lies dead on the kitchen floor, and his mother has been suffocated in her own bed. Initially, it appears to be a suicide, but Chief Inspector Javier Falcón has his doubts when he finds an enigmatic crumpled note in the dead man's hand.
Under the brutal summer heat, Falcón begins investigating Rafael Vega's dark life and starts receiving threats from the Russian mafia, which has been operating in the city for some time. His investigation into Vega's neighbours leads him to an American couple with a devastating past and to the torment of a famous actor whose only son is in prison for a terrible crime.
Two more suicides follow - one of them a high-ranking police officer - and a wildfire spreads across the hills of Seville. Falcón must now uncover the truth, revealing that everything is connected and that there is one more secret in Rafael Vega's sinister life.
