“Invisible Cities presents itself as a series of travel accounts that Marco Polo makes to Kublai Khan, Emperor of the Tartars. [...] To this melancholic emperor, who realised that his limitless power counts for little in a world heading towards ruin, a visionary traveller speaks of impossible cities, for example, a microscopic city that expands, expands until it ends up formed by many concentric expanding cities, a spiderweb city suspended over an abyss, or a two-dimensional city like Moriana. [...] I believe that the book not only evokes a timeless idea of the city, but that it develops, sometimes implicitly, sometimes explicitly, a discussion about the modern city. [...] I think I have written something like a last love poem to cities, when it is increasingly difficult to live in them as cities.”
