Although the story centers on Madalena, the heiress, a woman of strong and virtuous character, the plot begins with Henrique de Souselas, a hypochondriac with city habits, coming to stay with his aunt Doroteia in a village in Minho, on his doctor's advice. The author thus illustrates one of his favorite theses: the regenerative effect of simple country life on city dwellers.
There are infinite life lessons we can draw from the work: from the romantic intrigue, with jealousy thrown in, to honor wounded by unjust slanders, to social and customs criticism. But Júlio Dinis also glosses over topics such as cronyism, bossism, the use of influence, political corruption, and religious fanaticism.
Come and discover the family rooms of the village; have tea at Casa do Mosteiro, savor a good soup at Casa de Alvapenha, witness the quarrels live at Zé P’reira's house, ask Uncle Vicente for advice on the best remedy, have a drink at Canada's shop, and if you are devout or have faith, go to church, but put an end to fanaticism.
