This novel by Júlio Dinis was first published in 1868 and is, as the author had already accustomed us to, a novel about a Portuguese village, very transparent for 19th-century society, and imbues some of his ideals into its characters.
The protagonist illustrates one of the author's favourite theses, as he presents a state of illness and depression caused by urban life in contrast to a healthy and vigorous life ensured by the rustic environment of Portuguese villages.
Madalena, the Heiress of Canaviais, and her cousin, Cristina, are depicted as strong and femininely virtuous women, capable of breaking rigid social opinions about love.
