The story follows a young merchant navy first mate who, upon docking in Bangkok, suddenly decides to abandon his maritime career. However, by "quirks of fate," he is invited to take his first command as captain of a merchant ship. Upon taking the position, he discovers that the previous captain was eccentric and died under mysterious circumstances.
The initial voyage turns into a nightmare when the ship becomes becalmed, the crew falls ill, and the captain has to deal with his inexperience, the madness of his first mate (Mr. Burns), and references to the "ghost" of the former commander. To save the ship and crew, the protagonist must cross the "shadow line" — a symbolic boundary that separates careless youth from the responsibility of mature life.
