The young heiress

The story recounts the adventures of Perrine Paindavoine, a young girl who, after her father's death, travels with her ailing mother from India to France, with the goal of finding refuge with her paternal grandfather.
After her mother's death during the journey, the brave little Perrine arrives alone and without resources in the industrial town of Maraucourt. There, she discovers that her grandfather, owner of a jute factory, is a wealthy but extremely rude and severe man.
Unrecognized and confronted with her grandfather's hostility, Perrine assumes a false identity and works as a factory laborer. The narrative focuses on her struggle for survival, her determination to work hard, and her continuous efforts to win her grandfather's affection, keeping her true identity a secret until the end.
