The thirty-eight years since the end of World War II have been constantly marked by a whole series of conflicts. The Chinese Civil War, Korea, Vietnam, the Indo-Pakistani War, the Arab-Israeli Wars, and the Iran-Iraq conflict are among the most significant, but conflicts considered minor have also played an important historical and military role. War in the World describes in detail the causes and outcomes of all types of conflicts, as well as revealing the constant tactical and strategic evolution parallel to them. Conventional wars shared the world's attention with drawn-out guerrilla campaigns; displays of an omnipotent technology went hand in hand with small-scale demonstrations of urban terrorism.
The main consultant for this work is Sir Thompson, a world authority on guerrilla warfare, and the introduction was written by John Keegan, a renowned historian. Each chapter had the contribution of an expert on the subject (Sir Robert himself wrote three), many of them recognised authorities from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
Each of the conflicts is first outlined in general. Then, its specific nature – the parties involved, the weaponry and the tactics – is analysed in depth. Special attention was also paid to the international politics of the period in question, as most conflicts can only be understood within a global context.
Technical information and the development of the conflicts are covered by approximately 85 diagrams and 125 colour maps, along with over 500 photographs. Overall, this is an extensive and in-depth coverage of wars and guerrilla warfare between 1945 and 1983.
