The Maias - Classics of Literature in Comics 11

Three generations of the Maias, the family whose destiny we follow in this major work of Portuguese literature, a handful of extraordinary characters, with their virtues and their (many!) flaws, and the bourgeois society of late 19th-century Lisbon, at once so close and so distant from modern Lisbon, are the material from which this great novel is made. Eça de Queirós called it "the book in which I put everything I had in a sack", unaware that he had penned the greatest novel of 19th-century Portuguese literature, a faithful, and at times cruel, portrait of a society constrained by hypocrisy and the values of Romanticism.
