According to Garrett himself, he began writing O Arco de Sant'Ana while he was quartered in the Convento dos Grilos, during the siege of Porto.
The plot, based on a passage from Fernão Lopes' Crónica de D. Pedro I, takes place in medieval Porto, evoking the social and political life of the town, agitated by popular uprisings. These were led by the artisans, headed by the young Vasco and supported by King D. Pedro, in a struggle against the political oligarchy, embodied by the bishop and his acolytes, especially Pêro Cão, the tax collector.
In the 14th century, Garrett recreated the political and religious conflicts of his own time's society, namely the Cabralist reaction, supported by the Church, which aimed to dissolve liberalism and restore ecclesiastical power.
