Rodolfo Cavalieri was born in Portugal during the Philippine rule. Times had changed for the Jews, and since the reign of D. Manuel I, the family had converted to Christianity. But even so, they did not escape religious persecution. His grandfather, a court physician, was deported to São Tomé and the family had to flee, mingling with a troupe of street performers, to northern Europe. Becoming musicians, they eventually arrived in Venice where, for years, they worked with the famous Monteverdi. Opera was taking its first steps and Rodolfo believed he could finally live in peace, just for music. But the political games in the Serenissima were even more Machiavellian than in Portugal, and once again an accusation arose for the Inquisition to end the Cavalieri family.
