The new medicine

This essay is dedicated to the extraordinary transformation of Medicine in recent decades. The science, practice, and ethics of this New Medicine are given particular attention, and it explains how it has absorbed scientific and technological progress and adapted to a new economic, social, and even moral ecology, and to the demands of a society increasingly informed about the power of medical art. Looking to the future, a concern is expressed – aging; an uncertainty – the sustainability of healthcare systems; a necessity – "translational" medicine; and a possible utopia – "personalised" medicine.
