A Game of Thrones - Book I

When Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell Castle, receives a visit from his old friend, King Robert Baratheon, he is far from guessing that his life, and that of his family, is about to enter a spiral of tragedy, conspiracy, and death. During his stay, the king invites Eddard to move to court and assume the prestigious position of Hand of the King. He accepts, but only because he suspects that the previous holder of that title was poisoned by the queen herself: a cruel manipulator from the Lannister clan. Thus, close to the king, Eddard hopes to protect him from the queen. But having the Lannisters as enemies is fatal: this family's ambition knows no bounds, and the king is in much greater danger than Eddard feared! Alone at court, Eddard also realizes that his life is worth nothing. And even his family, far in the north, might be in danger.
