Almost six years later, in 1965, the story was published in four parts in The New Yorker magazine. Besides narrating the extermination of farmer Herbert Clutter, his wife Bonnie, and children Nancy and Kenyon – a typical, quiet, and community-integrated American family of the 50s – the book reconstructs the trajectory of the murderers. Perry Smith and Dick Hickock planned the crime believing they would appropriate a fortune but found virtually nothing. Perry was a dreamer. He grew up in a troubled and violent way and felt that life had dealt him unfair blows. Dick, considered the brains of the duo, only wanted to snatch the money and disappear. Arrested and convicted, both died by hanging in 1965.
The intense relationship Capote established with his sources was crucial to the work's success. Besides spending more than a year in the Holcomb region, investigating and talking to residents, he grew close to the criminals and gained their trust. He drew a human and eloquent profile of the two "boys," as he used to call them.
